Breaking down barriers

A series of barriers and drivers for change have emerged from consideration of the seven Mission Priorities at the Territorial 2020 Summit.

Barriers

  • Activity in a number of instances has been over-riding purpose
  • Some aspects of our work and service have to varying degrees lost their original dynamism and relevance in today's society
  • Some elements of Salvation Army culture actually impede achievement of mission goals
  • In some cases, we are protecting a false identity of our mission
  • Salvationists shaped by the insular and consumer society in which they live
  • There is inadequate knowledge and understanding of who and what we are
  • Our theology needs to be central to our mission and ministry, and needs to be better taught and understood.

Drivers for change

  • Spiritual health: Developing a culture of supportive accountability that nurtures spiritual health and wellbeing (i.e. holiness)
  • Integrating corps and social services mission: Supporting and facilitating the integration of holistic mission between Corps, centres and social services
  • Communications: Developing accessible communication methods that encourage and empower shared mission participation
  • Innovative expressions: Encouraging innovative creative expressions of our identity as a mission and holiness movement
  • Streamline administration: Streamlining administrative structures and corps/centres for the allocation of all resources to maximise fulfilment of Mission Priorities
  • Training: Developing at all levels mission-focused training that is continually informed by our theological distinctives.
