Welcome to the Safe Space & TAKE Kare Ambassador program, operated by Salvos Street Teams.

From December 2014-June 2016, this volunteer driven program provided support to intoxicated and vulnerable young people in Sydney's CBD and Kings Cross every Friday and Saturday night.

In July 2012, 18 year old Thomas Kelly was brutally attacked in an unprovoked coward punch, leaving him in a coma he did not recover from. Thomas' tragic death sparked outrage in the community and put the spotlight on the issue of alcohol-fuelled violence in our community. Incidents such as the one that claimed Thomas' life are preventable and it is our hope that no family has to go through a tragedy like this again.

For the Salvation Army and our partners, the Thomas Kelly Youth Foundation, the goal is simple; help people get home safely.

Each Friday and Saturday night we set up a Safe Space next to Sydney Town Hall and a Safe Space in Kings Cross. These Safe Spaces were open throughout the night for young revellers to rehydrate, charge their phone, sober up, receive first aid or simply stop by for a chat.

Our volunteers are called the TAKE Kare Ambassadors and they work in teams, on foot, around the city identifying young people who might be in distress or in vulnerable situations. The teams help people in simple ways and support them to enjoy a safe night that ends well.
