Why volunteer with Oasis Youth Support Network?

Oasis works with disadvantaged and homeless young people, but it is incredibly rewarding experience to be part of the journey that they are on; to see the changes and be part of that process in some small way.

Not only will you be helping to make a positive change in the lives of these young people, but you will also have the chance to learn new skills, make new friends and see your efforts appreciated by the people you are helping.

Studies have shown that giving your time to help others can be good for your health, wellbeing and social skills, so you can expect to feel the positive impact in these areas too.

Can we have more people than is recommended for a volunteer role?

Recommendations are made to ensure that everyone who volunteers for Oasis has a positive experience and feel valued. We do not want people to feel like they have wasted their time because there is not enough for them to do.

It is also important that we are not overwhelming the young people who either live on site or frequent our drop in service with too many unfamiliar faces.

What kind of work can volunteers do?

Please refer to General Volunteering for details.

What length and type of commitment is expected of volunteers?

The length of time and type of commitment varies depending on the program and what is required as part of that role. Most of our volunteering opportunities can be booked in as a one off or on a more regular basis, but no long term commitment is required to participate.

There are some programs that do require a longer term commitment. This applies to the driving program specifically as volunteers are asked to commit to helping a young person complete their 120 hours – so that there is consistency.

When looking for a volunteer role it is important to find a role where the commitment suits your availability.

Do you have corporate volunteering opportunities?

Yes, Oasis offers opportunities for its corporate partners to get involved in our work through corporate volunteering. The roles listed under General Volunteering are also relevant to corporate groups. We are happy to work with you to facilitate this as a corporate volunteering opportunity.

Please email us directly oasis.volunteers@aue.salvationarmy.org or complete the registration form at General Volunteering.

Will I need to undergo any specific checks?

Depending on the role and frequency of involvement, there are checks that need to be completed prior to volunteering. Please refer to the Policies section of this page

How will I be supported whilst volunteering with Oasis Youth Support Network?

Whilst volunteering, all participants will be supervised by at least one staff member. You will be given a Trauma Informed Care information sheet that you are required to have read prior to arriving on site for volunteering. You will also receive an overview of Oasis to give you a better understanding of the programs and services we offer and why.

If you are taking on a volunteering role with the driving program, you will also be required to have a face-to-face session with one of our trained staff members on Trauma Informed Care.

Can we volunteer as a family?

We definitely encourage families to get involved with Oasis, however all family members must be over the age of 21 to volunteer on site.

I want to support Oasis, but we can’t afford to give up our time, how can I help?

Why not sign up to fundraise for Oasis in one of the many events we hold annually or donate new clothing, underwear, toiletries or pantry items.

Check out our Fundraising Campaigns or Giving pages to find out more about how you can get involved with Oasis.
