No Interest Loans

No Interest Loans

Salvos No Interest Loans provide loans for essential items to people in need on low incomes, who are unable to qualify for other affordable loans.

The Salvation Army NILS program is part of the Australia-wide No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) network and makes no interest loans accessible to people on low incomes to purchase essential items and services.

Our staff are available to discuss loan opportunities with people in NSW, QLD & ACT, to help source a local NILS provider (either Salvos or other) or where that is not possible, provide direct assistance in applying for a loan. The Salvation Army can also assist those in regional or remote areas without a local NILS provider.

If you live in a state other than NSW, QLD or ACT, please see below.

Important subsidy information for NSW residents

Under the NSW Home Energy Appliance Program (HEA) NSW residents who apply for NILS can save up to 40% off the cost of a new fridge and up to 50% off the cost of a new TV.

What can Salvos NILS be used for?

Salvos NILS may be used to purchase essential household and personal capital items, for example:

  • refrigerator/freezer
  • bed/mattress
  • computer
  • washing machines
  • health items
  • medical and dental equipment or aids, and
  • energy efficient appliance

What can't Salvos NILS be used for?

Salvos NILS cannot be used for the repayment of current bills or debts and cannot be paid to the applicant directly. They also cannot be used for bond or rent money, rent arrears or living expenses.

How do I qualify?

You need to be on a low income e.g. receive a Centrelink payment, holder of a Health Care card or have a low household income. Exceptional circumstances can be considered.

Loans can be used for more than one item and need to be repaid over a period of 12-18 months. Repayment plans are tailored to suit individual circumstances. The amount of a loan is usually less that $1,200 however in some circumstances loans can be up to $1,500. In all cases assessment is based on providing finance for essential needs, taking a persons financial capacity into account.

Please remember, Salvos NILS relies on the repayment of loans to enable us to continue providing NILS to other members of the community.

Where can I get help?

The Salvation Army offers NILS in New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory.
