Youth Homelessness: An Introduction (Years 7-12)

Youth Homelessness: An Introduction is an experience that provides students with an opportunity to understand and empathise with those experiencing homelessness.

Students will learn about the basics of homelessness in Australia, different homelessness services, how to support someone at risk of and experiencing homelessness, as well as hear real stories and partake in open discussions.

Students will gain a broader understanding of at risk groups within their community and be better prepared to talk about and respond to homelessness.

Youth Homelessness: Taking Action and Making a Difference (Years 7-12)

In Youth Homelessness: Taking Action and Making a Difference students will learn about the current national response to homelessness in Australia and will gain new ideas, tools and an action plan which can be used to make an impact in their local community and align with the existing response to the issue. We will also cover the latest volunteering and campaign opportunities for school groups and individuals.

Community and Caring (Years 5-6)

Community and Caring is our flagship primary course that provides an introduction to the social work of The Salvation Army, caring for others, making a difference and the concept of community. The workshop also includes real life examples of community stories and responses.

How do our workshops link to the curriculum?

Salvos Schools workshops are designed with the school curriculum in mind. In particular, our workshops relate to the following subject areas:

Community and Family Studies (CAFS)

Salvos Schools aims to support the existing CAFS learning outcomes, particularly for youth and homelessness. Students will learn about the prevalence of homelessness in the community, issues of concern and the specific for those experiencing homelessness and about the types of specialist homelessness services in Australia. Students will also develop the skills to identify individual strengths and capabilities to be a positive influence and a proactive member of society.

English

Salvos Schools teaching resources are mapped to the National English Curriculum. Students will gain further understanding of at risk groups in their community, as well as the ability to identify their own values, attitudes and life skills through exploring social sustainability and community advocacy.

PDHPE

Salvos Schools workshops and teaching resources are mapped to the new national Year 9 and 10 PDHPE curriculum and link to the existing PDHPE framework.

Religious Education

The Salvation Army was founded on the principle of “Christianity with its sleeves rolled up.” Salvos Schools aims to equip students with an understanding of how moral, ethical and spiritual values influence the call for justice in the world. Students will learn how belief in their own potential can affect positive outcomes through their involvement in creating awareness about social justice issues.

Service Learning

Salvos Schools provides community engagement opportunities for schools participating in service learning. Through hands-on experiences, students will develop social responsibility, build partnerships with support services, connect with community members, gain further understanding of at risk and disadvantaged groups and learn to approach every situation with equity and compassion.

Welfare

Salvos Schools supports school welfare objectives and the NSW Crossroads program. Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of at risk young people in their community which will empower them to support others, and themselves, through tough times.
