Important Community Announcement: Goods-in-Kind Not Needed

30 January 2013

The Salvation Army is calling upon the Australian community to please not donate goods-in-kind and instead support individuals and families devastated by natural disasters financially through The Salvation Army Flood Appeal.

Salvation Army spokesperson, Major Bruce Harmer, says it is fantastic to see how Australians pull together during trying times like these, but what is most needed by individuals and families right now is financial support.

“There has been an overwhelming response from the Australian community for The Salvation Army Flood Appeal, and we would like to thank those who have donated thus far,” said Major Harmer.

“However, what is needed most at this time is financial support. This allows The Salvation Army to provide immediate assistance, while also giving individuals and families the means and dignity to purchase items that they need most. This in turn helps stimulate local economies, thereby allowing communities to get back on their feet.”

Woolworths has announced it will match dollar-for-dollar, until $1 million is raised through its stores, donations made by customers at Woolworths checkouts across Australia to the Salvation Army Flood Appeal.

Australians wishing to donate to the Flood Appeal can do so through the Australian Disaster Relief Fund online at salvos.org.au, by phoning 13 SALVOS (13 72 58), or in in person at any Westpac Bank branch. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.
