What we do

The overall goal of the International Development office is to contribute towards the increase of number of communities who are moving towards the alleviation of their poverty.

Our focus is to work alongside communities every step of the way; from the process of ascertaining their needs through to the project delivery.

We believe that it is paramount to provide tools for sustainable projects, to train people and to enable them to achieve their full potential, beyond the project completion.

We serve without discrimination and share the Gospel where welcome. This is our approach to bringing a lasting change and thus to break the cycle of poverty. We realise that this is not easily done, but believe that as we build up relationships with individuals and communities in partnership with our donors, we will see a much greater impact.

We are prompted by God’s love for us and the acknowledgement that all people are created in His image. So we place value and dignity upon humanity.

By addressing and aligning to the Millennium Development Goals, we aim to provide valuable programs for development and evangelism.

Our strategic focus

AusAid funded community projects

AusAid funded projects are approved and funded on a ratio basis by AusAID and SAID. The Salvation Army presently has Base Accreditation which gives SAID access to $A150,000 per year for approved developmental projects and $800,000 for Church Partnership Program (CPP) in Papua New Guinea.

SAID funded community projects

SAID funded projects, are financed from monies raised by or through the SAID office, mainly through the gift catalogue and other donations. These projects generally come to our attention, through our visits or requests from overseas.

Mission support projects

These are projects that support or build the organisational strenght of The Salvation Army, with finances allocated from the non-tax deductible portion of The Self Denial Appeal. These encompass three categories:

  • Building of church halls, residences for Salvation Army officers, computers, vehicles etc.
  • Activities that promote the spiritual mission of The Salvation Army like youth and other special events.
  • Community type of projects which may include building clinics, renovation of schools, upgrade a social institution etc
