How to Help

Schools

Oasis is fortunate to have the support of a number of schools from across Australia. As homelessness often hinders a young person’s ability to learn and increases the risk of a student prematurely leaving school, early intervention and awareness of this national issue is vital to bringing about change.

It is only through social justice advocacy, education and vocational training that the poverty cycle can be broken.

We are honoured to showcase the incredible initiatives undertaken by passionate students and their wider school community. All who are responsible for raising awareness of youth homelessness and significant funds to support the life changing services delivered by Oasis.

Scots College making a life changing difference to Oasis

In June 2011, Sydney’s prestigious Scots College launched the “Gift of Education Fund” with the purpose of providing disadvantaged young people with educational opportunities at Oasis.

Scots has been in partnership with Oasis over the past few years to raise funds to support vital programs and services that assist at-risk and homeless young people in Sydney’s inner city. The annual Cranbrook and Scots Rugby and Soccer games are now played for The Oasis Cup.

"As an institution of learning and a community who value education, Scots is committed to partnering with these young people in turning their dreams into reality,” said Dr Ian PM Lambert, Principal of The Scots College.

"As a school and community, we place great emphasis on 'giving back'. Scots boys are blessed with opportunities and skills that many young people on the street may never experience. They feel a great sense of gratitude for all that they have, and enjoy harnessing their talents to serve others in need."

Throughout the school year, the Scots community also undertakes additional fundraising activities to benefit Oasis, including hosting The Oasis film night and rallying a Scots College team of dedicated students and parents to run for Oasis at the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival.

Crown Street Public School launches community cookbook

It is well known that the act of cooking and sharing a meal is a great catalyst in bringing people together.

Crown Street Public School have ingeniously harnessed this power, bringing their student body and local community together through a collaborative cookbook, which is also part of an inspiring fundraising initiative for Oasis.

Crown Street Cooks: Food from the Heart of Surry Hills is a terrific collaboration between the school, local celebrity chefs such as Mark Best (Marque), Kylie Kwong (Billy Kwong) and Bill Granger (Bills) and many supportive families and businesses in and around the Surry Hills precinct.

With each copy sold, Crown Street Public School has kindly offered to donate $1 towards The Salvation Army’s Oasis Youth Support Network.

“We recognise that while our children sleep tight at night there are many other children who have no home to go to,” said Lesley Holden, Project Director of Crown Street Cooks.

“We are proud to be able to help other young people in our neighbourhood find a safe home, and Oasis directly helps to facilitate this.”

The first print run of 5,000 copies ran off the shelves and they are currently awaiting the arrival of a 2,000 copy re-print.
