How to Help

Youth Homelessness Matters!

6th April 2011

It's Youth Week, and today is Youth Homelessness Matters Day!

At Oasis, we have been busy working with people like the Y Foundations, Virgin Unite, the Caledonia Foundation, Senator the Hon. Mark Arbib, Peter Garrett AM, MP and the stunning Cate Blanchett, to launch a couple of new campaigns and initiatives aimed to increase awareness about the issue of youth homelessness.

This morning, THE OASIS Homeless Short Film Competition was launched at Oasis by Cate Blanchett and Peter Garrett AM, MP Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth. (Cate is pictured with young people from Oasis)

The competition is part of an extensive education and outreach program targeted to secondary schools and offers $25,000 in prize money. Students will be encouraged to film all aspects of homelessness from their perspective, to raise awareness, highlight positive stories, inspire action locally and nationally, and support existing services.

Also launched today is the 'End Youth Homelessness' website and awareness campaign by Virgin Unite, and supported by Senator the Hon. Mark Arbib, Minister for Social Housing and Homelessness. Virgin Unite is on a mission to get awareness about the plight of homeless young people out there and rally for community involvement.

Major Robbin Moulds AM, Director of Oasis is excited by these new initiatives and developing partnerships and said, “Oasis has worked with different charities, corporate organisations, individuals and the Government to support young people for years. But this is the first time that we have come together to publicly campaign for awareness, equality and community support. This is how we will tackle this growing issue and make a lasting impact on the lives of thousands of homeless young people.”
