Laxmi, Roberto, Charlotte and Mandy. These four people have remarkable stories.
And over the next six weeks these four people will be featured predominately in The Salvation Army Self Denial Appeal videos.
If you’re not familiar with the Self Denial Appeal, every year The Salvation Army showcases six videos at every corps in Australia Eastern, Australia Southern and New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga territories featuring the Salvos international aid work.
Starting on Sunday 26 February, Salvationists from the Australian Southern Territory Mark and Kylie Hamilton introduce the series and share why they choose to give to the Self Denial Appeal. The following four weeks feature personal stories from Laxmi in Nepal, Roberto in the Philippines, Charlotte in The Democratic of Congo and Mandy in Suriname.
The last week on 1 April is the Altar Service and this week features a music video with footage from the previous five weeks. This week is also an opportunity for you to give financially to the Self Denial Appeal.
The idea behind the term “Self Denial” means giving up something for a greater cause.
For example, you could give up buying chocolate for six weeks and donate the money you would have spent on chocolate to the Self Denial Appeal.
So, what are you giving up for this year’s Self Denial Appeal?
Week 1 – Introduction
Salvationists from the Australia Southern Territory, Mark and Kylie Hamilton talk about why they give the Self Denial Appeal.
Week 2 – Nepal
We meet Laxmi who, with the help of The Salvation Army and a new sewing program it has developed, has been able to establish her own small business and begin to break the cycle of poverty.
Week 3 – Philippines
This week features the story of Roberto and his family, and how Captains Rod and Debbie Serojales have helped them rebuild after the devastating floods in 2009.
Week 4 – The Democratic Republic of Congo
Charlotte is just 21 and is the sole carer for her five siblings and her own son. They are beneficiaries of a Salvation Army housing program which also provides them with farming land.
Week 5 – Suriname
New Zealand Salvationist Mandy Carian works in Suriname as the Director of the Ramoth Children's Home, a place for young people who have been abandoned by their parents.
Week 6 – Music Video
Featuring footage from the previous five weeks, including a music video to the accompaniment of either The Salvation Amry's Canadian Staff Band or The Paradise Band from Adelaide.
Keep you eyes peeled for the Self Denial Appeal videos. They will be uploaded onto the MORE website weekly.
