Have you ever felt ashamed of your past? Have you ever told someone about how you got saved but left out bits and pieces of your old life because you felt it was too shameful?
Sometimes it is necessary to just stick to the main points of your life story and not give every detail, but if you are keeping it because of guilt or shame, then it’s for the wrong reasons.
You may have made mistakes in your old life that you’re not too proud of (remember, we still make mistakes when we are saved). But if we did not have this past life to compare our new life with, then we wouldn’t see how great God’s mercy and grace is, would we?
Your past is not a stain on your life but rather a specific colour that contributes to the whole picture of your life. Without a specific colour, a painting would be less beautiful or effective. It is necessary that the colour (or your past) is included when you look at the whole picture or else it is less effective.
If you keep parts of your old life hidden, you are giving your past the power to control you so that it could return and haunt you. God wants you to confess your sins to him so that he can set you free and give you life in replacement for your sin. And this means EVERYTHING! He does not condemn you. If you do not surrender all your past actions for God, it still has a place in your life and can still affect you. When you hand it over to God, it is no longer a part of you: you can look at it and talk about it like it’s not even a part of your nature, because, guess what? It’s not! It’s separated from you!
When God came into your life, he made you a new creation. You are born again! You have an “old life” and you have a “new life”. Your new life is completely transformed!
2 Corinthians 5:7 says: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!”
Remember your sin is separated from you and you are now used to glorify God! When people hear your story or testimony, they will be amazed at how great your God is! There is power in your testimony! People will come to know Jesus; lives will be healed when you tell of the great grace and mercy of our Father! “In my weakness, he is strong!”
Your testimony isn’t always just about all the good stuff you are doing for the Kingdom now (although, this is part of it!). Your testimony is the story of how you came to the cross, who you were before and how Jesus has transformed you. Don’t be ashamed! Proclaim!
