Leadership: What is in your hands?

20th October 2011 by Claire Hill

Ever felt like you haven’t got much to offer God?

Moses felt exactly like this. In Exodus 3-4 we read about how God appeared to Moses and said to him:

“Go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”

Moses came up with all kinds of objections and questions for God:

  • “They won’t trust me. They won’t listen to a word I say,” (4:1 The Message).
  • “I don’t talk well. I’ve never been good with words, neither before nor after you spoke to me. I stutter and stammer," ( 4:10 The Message).
  • “But why me? What makes you think that I could ever go to Pharaoh and lead the children of Israel out of Egypt?” (3:11 The Message)

During God’s conversation with Moses he asked him a really important question. He asked:

“What is in your hands?”

The truth is that God has placed a whole load of beautiful, potentially powerful things in our hands – things he can use to accomplish seriously significant salt & light, Kingdom of God advancement stuff.

Physical resources

Most of us have got physical resources in our hands – money and possessions.

We might compare what we have to what others in our church or school have and think that we are poor but compared to most people in the world even the poorest Australians are wealthy.

The money I spent on my last pair of jeans ($35) could provide a child in a developing nation with food, clean water and education for a month. How crazy is that?

Spiritual Gifts

God has given spiritual gifts to every single one of us (1 Corinthians 12; Romans 8; Ephesians 4) without exception.

1 Corinthians 12:10-11 says:

Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! The variety is wonderful.

You might not know what your spiritual gifts are yet – but the Bible affirms that you have at least one that you have been entrusted with.

Experiences

God has an amazing way of using our experiences for his good purposes, if we allow him to.

Consider the things that you’ve experienced:

  • In your relationship with Jesus
  • In your family life
  • At school
  • When you have served God
  • When life has been really tough

God doesn’t let any of this go to waste. As Romans 8:28 says:

“God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”

All of this can be used powerfully by God to minister to other people.

Voice

We are allowed to speak freely in this country.

We can talk with friends of family, we can address all of our Facebook friends with total ease and we can even influence politicians by writing letters or gathering signatures for petitions.

I have taken this completely for granted for much of my life.

But my voice could be used to:

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves” (Proverbs 31:8).

Or to share Jesus with people who have never heard about him.

Skills, personality and passions

You’ve got skills. National studies have shown that even the average person has 400-600 of them! You have passions – certain things you just love doing or particular issues that move your heart to empathy or anger or hope more than the average person’s.And you’ve got a totally unique personality – different to any person who has ever lived or will ever live.

God designed you the way you are for a reason.

God has placed a bunch of amazing stuff in our hands.

And he can do amazing things when we offer them up to him for his use.
