Well my name is Benjamin Baillie, but I prefer to be called BJ. I’m 19 and live in Bundaberg, where I have been attending the Bundaberg Corps for the last 10 years.

Since being in Bundaberg I have learned and done a fair few things which have shaped me to be the person I am today.

One of the things that God has done in my life was helping me get a job at the Tom Quinn Community Centre (TQCC). My role is to help and support eight to 10 students from two of the local high schools who are at risk of leaving school early. I help these guys, befriend them and challenge them about their lifetsyle choices. It’s also my role to help them with projects; recently we made some bar stools from recycled timber.

Working with these students has been challenging at times, but in these times I've had to pray and ask myself, if I were to stop helping these students grow, then who else would help them? Some of these young people don’t even know how special they are and they have started to give up on themselves. To me it’s sad that they are only 15 and 16 and are already giving up, as most people have already given up on them because they are “bad kids” who are just "too hard".

The students often ask why I do what I do with them, and I just tell them the truth and say I want to help them and want to be a part of their lives. Part of the foundation of the TQCC is compassion, integrity and transformation, and all through the different people and activities that go on out there, these three things are definitely at the core of it all.

I can only give God the glory for what happens at the TQCC and for what I have shared, as it is only a small amount of what God is doing out at this place.

  1. well,i bet it's a very hard work to befriend and support those who give up,but if you are right there to help them on the right time, you can save smn's life sharing The Good News with him/her or just being round!
    Keep at it,BJ!
    God is your strength!
