Hey, my name is Tamara Lloyd, and I came to Christ in February this year.
My back story is that my family split up during my senior years of high school. Before this happened I did all the right things, said all the right words, never went to parties, never drank, never smoked or got too serious with a boy. I was one of those kids that every parent wants, or so I thought.
My mum suffers from a mental disability which makes her act differently to the way other peoples’ parents act. I thought my life was perfect until I realised that it wasn’t.
The day my mum chased me down the street and told me she didn’t want me anymore was the big thing that made me feel things weren’t right in my family. After this happened, I then for the first time, told my dad what was happening to me and despite living together, we didn’t really know that we were both fighting the same thing, my mum.
As I spent all my time being busy at a youth centre, doing plays, going on tour, doing my diploma, like all the other kids around me, I felt normal. As I did this, my dad came to Christ and made himself busy at the local Salvation Army Church. What we were really doing was just avoiding mum.
This is when my Dad decided that it was no longer safe for me to be living with my mum, so he decided to help me. I think the weirdest moment was going back to the house for the first time after a few weeks of living with friends and finding all my stuff in the garage.
From then on Dad and I had a perfect life together. Free of worry and fear. It was great. I even started attending church with him.
Well anyway, the end of year 12 started coming up and I had to make a choice about what I wanted to do next year and I felt compelled to do youth work because of all the fun times I’d already had at my own local youth centre. I found a pamphlet for the Salvation Army’s School for Youth Leadership's (SFYL) Certificate 4 in youth work. So I thought, why not.
It was really far away but I thought it would be an adventure hanging out with a bunch of Christians. So I went to SFYL and Dad went to college to become an officer.
It was there at the school that I gave my life to Christ and have felt more loved and accepted than anywhere else. It’s great to know that my life is in control by someone bigger than I can understand. Now I feel safe no matter what I do as long as I stick to God’s plan for me.
