Let's not pretend we're all not just a teeny, weenie, bit jealous of Kate Middleton. She just became a princess. Sigh ...
Maybe being a princess isn't your thing. But have you ever felt so jealous of someone that you spent a lot of your time trying to become them?
So many people resort to plastic surgery so they can look like the celebrity they admire.
While this is quite extreme, how many times have you wished you were as skinny as Miranda Kerr, had Katy Perry's lips or Taylor Swift's curls?
OK, so this is what the Bible has to say about jealousy: "You shall not covet your neighbour's house. You shall not covet your neighbour's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour." Exodus 20:17
I used the think, what in the world does covet mean? Who owns an Ox these days or has a servant? And your neighbour – well that just means the old lady next door – right?
How about we put it another way. So let's substitute the Ox for a Chanel handbag, the servant with your own personal shopping credit card and the neighbour with your best friend.
When was the last time you were jealous that your friend got a car for her 18th birthday, or when your friend's whole family went on a trip to Disneyland for a week, or when your brother racked up an expensive phone bill and your parents payed for it while you were responsible and didn't go over the limit but still had to pay for your own bill.
Sometimes life doesn't seem fair. Your friend doesn't get pimples, another friend always gets the new top that you can't afford and you have frizzy hair while your best friend has the perfect straight hair you want.
But how much time do you spend complaining about what you don't have?
While we don't always get what we want, we still have a lot. Some people don't get food on a regular basis, some sleep on the streets, and some have even been abandoned by their family.
It's OK to want things that other people have but the problem arises when you are completely consumed with wanting things, or wanting to be like someone else that you forget who you are.
You are special, amazing, intelligent, powerful, beautiful and loveable!
And this is why.
When you're growing up, you start experiencing a lot of body changes. It's hard when you're the only one getting pimples and your friends are not.
It's easy to want someone else's figure, hair, skin, height or facial features.
But remember God made you in his image. He made you beautiful. He hand-crafted your body into his liking.
"You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvellous – and how well I know it." Psalm 139:13-15
I can hear you say it, "But what if I don't like it?" If this is what you're saying, then this is my advice to you:
We can spend our entire lives trying to be like someone else, but God has called each one of us to be ourselves – never forget that!
