Facebook Missionary?

12th May 2011 by Nathaniel Brown

What kind of Facebook Christian are you?

The Mardi Gras Christian: loud and proud

  • Religious views: I love Jesus
  • Regularly updates their status with a great Bible verse
  • Comments on someone else's status with a great verse
  • Frequently caught quoting an inspiring line from a worship song
  • Not afraid to join the We Love Jesus group

The Emerging Christian: pro faith but anti-religious

  • Religious views: follower of Jesus
  • Updates status with a cryptic allusion to faith
  • Loves weighing in on Rob Bell arguments
  • Is skeptical of joining any Christian groups

The Salvation Army Christian: Jesus bled red, yellow, and blue

  • Religious views: Salvation Army
  • Updates their status mid-Commissioning/Congress/Welcome/Farewell
  • Profile picture probably includes a brass instrument and/or epaulettes
  • Loves joining all Salvation Army related causes

The Probably-Can't-Tell-That-I'm-A-Christian: Jesus + facebook are like cricket + interesting

  • Religious views – blank
  • Statuses about movies, lunch and other random stuff
  • Could be a deliberate attempt to not look like a Christian
  • Could be an accidental result of having no Christian content on wall
  • Either way social media is not for evangelism

Is it possible to be an effective Facebook missionary? Probably.

Is it possible that over-zealous Facebook evangelism could be damaging to the Kingdom? Probably.

Are you called to be salt and light in the world? Absolutely.

Is your Facebook saying what you want it to say?
