A competition that lines up eligible bachelors and shows them off to the world... Would Jesus make the final cut? Would he win? Would he refuse to take part?
Cleo magazine is holding their annual Australia's Top 50 Bachelors contest. A bunch of very different guys have made the list of 50. There are athletes, actors, musicians and other typical famous types but also a chef, a town planner and even a chiropractor.
These 50 blokes range in age and profession but all have something in common. Apparently (I wouldn’t know because my eyes are married) they are all ridiculously good-looking.
Yeah, they each have a short interview to show how funny and clever they are, but this is only a very small part of their profile in Cleo. Next to their three short questions, there is a very large, styled picture, designed to make the ladies go all weak at the knees.
If Jesus was hanging out as a man on earth today would he be nominated? He was a carpenter so he was definitely buff.
Whipping out miracles has got to add to your appeal right? Would someone put his name forward? Would he see it as a good opportunity to raise his profile and extend his ministry?
Would he be saddened at the very suggestion of posing for a glossy mag that includes articles on “sexing-up” your image?
There are a couple of stellar young Christian chaps who are actually in the running to be Cleo magazine’s number one bachelor. I know they must have wrestled with some of these questions as they accepted their nominations.
Perhaps it seemed like a good platform to be able to mention their faith. Although their interviews don’t mention their faith, maybe they could have more opportunities if they win. Who knows?
I don’t think I would be comfortable taking part in a campaign that encourages others to lust. But the fact is, no one has ever asked me to enter anything similar and I don’t think we truly know how we would act unless we are placed in the same scenario.
Would Jesus be happy to be on a poster above our bed? If not, does that mean Christians shouldn’t take up modelling? Would he take up promo opportunities so he could be a stronger voice to our generation? Would he enter Australian Idol so he could perform a worship song?
So many questions and so few answers. The key I think is that we desperately need wisdom as we navigate the opportunities before us. You might not be getting job offers as an underwear model, being given a Sony contract to sing raunchy songs or being nominated as a super, hot bachelor, but there will be choices we need to make that will require heaps of wisdom.
The Bible has tonnes to say about wisdom. Mostly, it is up to us to seek it out. Check out James 1:5 and James 3:17.

I wish I knew what the guy in the background of that photo was doing...
I think he is lining up his reflection in some mirror he has back there to pluck out a grey hair :)
