Girlzone: Valentine's Day Blues

7th February 2011 by Esther Pinn

I'm a HUGE fan of Valentine's Day. It's the day after my birthday and my husband spoils me rotton – it's awesome!!

But before I met my husband, over 3 years ago now, I didn't enjoy Valentine's Day at all. No one ever sent me a love note or a rose. I always felt lonely – I definitely had the Valentine's Day blues.

People would tell me that one day an amazing guy would come and sweep me off my feet, but I didn't believe them.

Being Single

Sometimes it's hard being single BUT it's definitely OK to be single. Why? Because it's the best time in your life to figure who you are, who you want to be and who God wants you to be. Read Psalm 139.

While I was single I spent a lot of time trying to figure out who I was and there were plenty of times during that season, when I knew I wasn't ready for a relationship.

So, when my husband came along, I felt ready for a committed relationship because of all those years I had spent sowing into my relationship with God. It was all in God's timing! It was right and I knew it within myself.

I'm glad I waited. But if I'm honest, it really did test my patience!

10 Top Tips to Deal with Valentine's Day

1. Don't be miserable: Please, please don't sit in a misery pool on Valentine's Day. It's the worst thing you can do. Surround yourself with friends and find something to laugh about.

2. Movie Night: Have a couple of the girls over and watch some romantic movies – maybe steer away from Romeo and Juliet.

3. The green-eyed monster of jealousy: Be happy for those who do have a boyfriend on Valentine's Day. Thank God for them and ask him to bless them. Don't worry your day of blessing will come!

4. Be the Valentine's Day Bandit: Write an anonymous Valentine's Day card for a friend (preferably female friend) with a Bible verse – let them know how much God loves them!

5. Don't have expectations: Don't wake up on Valentine's Day expecting a rose to be on your doorstep. The less you expect, the easier it will be if you don't receive anything. And if there is a rose on your doorstep, how much more of a surprise will it be.

6. The Chocolate Heart: Buy a chocolate heart for your friend, or even better, buy one for yourself to enjoy. And if you feel sad about not receiving a rose, then cheer yourself up by buying one of those chocolate roses for yourself (Yummy!).

7. Mirror Mirror on the Wall: When you get up in the morning and look at yourself in the mirror, tell yourself that you are beautiful – speak it over your life and believe it!

8. Love Letter: Write a love letter to Jesus. Tell him how much you love him and thank him for your future husband.

9. Listen to some tunes: If you're a Taylor Swift fan, then put your earphones in and listen to her happy romantic tracks. No break-up songs please!

10. Be thankful: Finally, thank God that you made it through another Valentine's Day and pray that your next one will be even better!

Comments

  1. Cool ideas.

I really like your idea of sowing into God while you're single so that when the right person comes along you will know that you are ready.

  2. Great ideas Esther!

I heard the best advice for singles

"Keep running the race God's got planned for you, every now and then turn to the left, turn to the right, if there is someone running the same direction and the same pace marry them and keep running'...

I love it! none of this 'i'm waiting mentality' ...

    I'm Running!

  3. Sounds great I know that Jesus will be getting at least one letter next Valentines Day and my friends can look forward to their chocolates as well !!!
