I would have to be one of the few people who travelled across the Indian Ocean to South Africa during the World Cup, and not have watched a live World Cup game.

I was, however, part of a lucky few who had the opportunity to go to South Africa on a mission trip. We made the journey to support the campaign of The Salvation Army in South Africa. The two main areas they focused on were human trafficking and outreaching to local communities.

We spent our time in two corps, Khambi and William Booth Corps. These corps are over eight hours out of Johannesburg and one hour from the nearest big town. These communities have the basic needs to survive, all thanks to the donations of larger businesses and The Salvation Army.

We had many opportunities to work with the local Salvationists and evangelise to the local communities. We ran kids clubs with the local children, teaching them Bible stories and songs from Australia (like My God is So Big), running games with them and handing out food and water. We also had the opportunity to evangelise to the community through door-to-door prayer, house visits, and motivational times with the local youth.

We also got to experience the division's Youth Councils. We experienced their passion for Christ and the energy they put in when they worship him. Worshipping with these guys has given me a new view on what it means to worship passionately. There is no need for fancy lights or skilful musicians. All you need is to mean the words you sing and put God in his rightful place. If you do that, worship is an unbelievable experience.

Also in the trip we were able to meet/evangelise with the patients of the hospital we stayed at, assist the local corps in their normal day-to-day activities, go on a safari and do some sight seeing in Johannesburg and Malaysia.

This trip is one that we will never forget. It has taught us so much – about the blessing God has given us, how well off and fortunate we are, how we need to help rural churches and communities, how we can use our gifts to outreach to others, and how we all worship the same God.

This trip has changed the way I look at life and how I live my life. I can never thank God enough for this once in a lifetime opportunity.
