grow - keira plon

5th July 2010 by Julia Hosking

I have always lived in a Christian house; I went to both a Christian primary and high school, and I go to church. I have always been a Christian, but at times so much teaching overwhelmed me and I found it easy to get lost in it all.

It all felt so trivial; you must do this and you cannot do that. It began to feel like to deserve what God has given me I had to do certain things. I knew that it was not by works that I was saved, but then, why bother acting the 'right' way?

No matter how much I told myself it was not to earn salvation, there was still the inclination to do the right thing as payment to deserve being saved, even though I knew nothing I could do would even come close.

On the train one morning, I was reading C.S Lewis' Mere Christianity, and I read an explanation of it all from a perspective I had not thought of before. Rather than being good to gain approval in people's eye or to earn salvation, "Christians think that any good he does comes from the Christ-life inside him. He does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because he loves us."

It has revealed to me that when we do good, we should not be proud of our own doing; a trap I often fall into. It's so easy to do something good and think yourself great for doing it. But now I see it as an overflow of Christ living in me.

All good comes from God and we are only able to do so through him. Now I often find when I must do something to help out, or act in the 'right' way, it is not because of me but because of God that I can do it. It is such a relief to know that I don't have to try to be good to be worthy of calling myself a Christian, but am given that gift because God loves me.

We believe in a God of the present, and reckon there is always something that you can share with others about God’s work in your life. Whether you’ve shared a story before or not, don’t be put off submitting three, four or twenty save-grow-serve stories! Don't delay, click here today!
