Guyzone: Where's the guy love?

14th June 2010 by Jarrod Newton

As guys, we can sometimes be pretty hopeless at encouraging and valuing the other guys around us. Saying something nice to one of your mates seems just a little too girly!

Here are three ways to bless your mates without affecting your 'man brand'.

#1 Buy them something. No, not flowers, because they're not your girlfriend. And not bath soaps, because they're not your mum. Just next time you're at the canteen, buy an extra couple of cokes and share them among your group. (Proving once and for all that mates are a lot cheaper to look after than girlfriends!)

#2 Use your words. I know, I know, words are complicated and it's pretty much always easier to just communicate with grunts and facial expressions, but there's a couple of phrases I think we can master if we try hard. Like 'Good job'. And 'Nice work'. And 'Thank you'. (And because each word is only one syllable you can probably still grunt them if you practice.)

#3 Don't fight them. Whoa, yes, I just totally went there! This might come as a shock, but some of you guys out there might have a few more Turk-and-JD moments if you actually stopped picking fights with the other guys in your neighbourhood. Less fighting = better friendships. (My life group, if you're reading, listen up!)
