Are you INSANE?

4th June 2010 by Rusty Hodges

Ok, so it might make me a little bit of a nerd but I enjoy reading books on the early days of our movement. If you want to hear about daring, radical acts of faith you should check out some of the stories.

Dave Collinson and Nealson Munn (Australia Southern Territory) have written a book called INSANE. The book contains stories of INSANE salvos that dreamed big, dared much and gained greatly.

Did you know that The Salvation Army birthed the Australian film industry with their limelight department? Did you know that a 16yr old girl started The Salvation Army in the USA, and a 20yr and 19yr old started the work in New Zealand of the Salvos?

Did you know that we established the first safety matches factory? Did you know that we even had chaplains at the frontlines of war, bringing a smile to soldiers faces and caring for those who were injured?

You see, we have such a rich heritage. When I read stories as found in INSANE and other history books of our movement, I wonder: where are today’s heroes? To me these people made a pathway for us to follow.

Our catch-cry of MORE is ‘same mission. new generation’. This new generation is you! That’s right- you can take your place in history books as a hero of the faith. The same mission that inspired the early day salvos is our mission today. Our mission is to Save Souls, Grow Saints, and Serve Suffering Humanity.

My dream is to see young people who are INSANE enough to do whatever it takes to see the mission accomplished and you know, we are already starting to see it happen.

We’re seeing 17yr olds starting groups in high school and young people are finding salvation. We’re seeing radical transformations occur in 15yr olds. We’re seeing 13yr olds going on mission trips oversees serving the poor and marginalised. It’s happening – but we want more INSANE heroes to step up and be counted.

All it takes is to ask God for a dream and open eyes to see where he is at work. Simply look for where you see God at work in your community, school, youth group and join him in that work. You could even ask, why not even challenge, your youth leader/corps officer to do something INSANE for the mission.

We’d love to hear your stories. It’s not necessarily about what we do; it’s about what God is doing in and through us. It’s a partnership after all.

We can find courage from Ephesians 3:20 “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.”

 Go for it!!!

 Till next time…
