save- matthew byram

28th December 2009 by Julia Hosking

I'm 22 years old, and I have been a Christian for seven years. I became a Christian at the Hunter Harvest at The Newcastle Entertainment Centre in 2002. Before then I had a heavy drug habit, but since being saved, I've given them all up. That was the hardest fight of my life because I went cold turkey, and I became paranoid and suicidal because of how fast I was coming down off the drugs.

I became involved with the Forster Tuncurry Salvos and since then my life has been so much better. For example, in 2007 at my 21st, 46 of my closest church friends turned up to support me. I didn't do so well in my School Certificate and I didn't do so crash hot in my HSC either. I am qualified in Certificate II in IT, I am currently doing Certificate III in IT Support and next year I'm doing my Diploma in IT Systems Administration and then a Bachelor of Applied Computing Science at Southern Cross University in Coffs Harbour, Lismore or the Gold Coast.

At the Salvos at Forster Tuncurry, I am involved in the sound and visual aspects of the church. I say a prayer during some meetings and I read Bible passages out.

A Bible verse that has helped me so much in my Christian journey is: Psalm 23:4 "Yea, as I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall feel no evil, your rod and your staff, they comfort and guide me".

And another one which isn't in the Bible is the last verse of the Footprints in the Sand poem: "when the man turned around and saw only one set of footprints in the sand, he said to Jesus, ‘why is there only one set of footprints in the sand?' Jesus said to him, ‘when you were going through those times of hardship and hurt and trials and tribulations THAT, is when I carried you'".

One word of advice to all you guys and girls is, don't be afraid to ask God to help you and don't be afraid to ask him to take all your hurts, burdens, sorrows and worries.
