My thought on the train

22nd December 2009 by Simeon Hoffmann

So I was on the train this morning and reading my bible....as you do... anyway I was reading 2 Corinthians just powering through it when all of sudden I came across this scripture that just totally blew me away.

I spent the next little while on the train just jotting down notes about this passage and what it could potentially mean.

So anyway I suppose I should share the scripture, so here it is 2 Corinthians 9:9 'He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.' NIV

I know at first it is a very kinda normal and plain verse, but let me share with you what went through my head the instant I began reading this scripture. I started thinking what if God in his infinite wisdom has actually given the gifts that he intended to be for the poor to us? What if he has actually given us the responsibility to share them with the poor? What if there was enough resources etc. to go around the whole world for everyone to live in equality? (There are plenty of facts to say that there is more than enough for everyone to live in equality if we actually wanted to)

Often I hear people saying things like 'If God is real why is there poverty and suffering?' But in response could it be that God sits and looks at the disposition of wealth and resources scratching his head and asking why are you keeping the gifts that don't belong to you? Could it be that God would sit and wander we are asking about poverty when he has actually given us the gifts to eradicate it? And if it is true I wander what he thinks when he sees how we use the gifts he has given us.

I have honestly never thought that some of the things that God has given me are actually gifts that belong to the poor... It is actually spinning me out to think about it...actually to be honest it is really scaring me cause I keep thinking what if God was to ask me what are the gifts in my house right now that I am keeping that actually belong to the poor? What if he was to ask me why I am keeping a hold of a gift that was never actually intended for me?

OK so here is the challenge...this Christmas as you open up your gifts I dare you to ask yourself the question 'What are the gifts that I have that actually belong to the poor?'

Merry Christmas
