I was one of nine Salvos who went to South Africa on a Project 1:8 mission trip from 24 September to 12 October. Over the two weeks, we met and hung out with young people aged from crèche to young adults.

We started at the Roots Conference in Johannesburg before heading to Umlazi, Durban for the rest of the trip. It was so great to mix with a varied group of people who all shared our love for God.

In many ways, it would be similar to what you would do in Australia on a mission trip: we visited people. But the biggest difference was that we prayed for a lot of people who were dying of HIV/AIDS.

For a while, I had really wanted to experience a mission trip. My first preference was Fiji, but that was cancelled, so when I was asked to go to South Africa, I jumped at the opportunity and I was really excited.

Why else did I go? I wanted to experience another country, I wanted to get a feeling of what they (the South Africans) go through on a daily basis, I wanted my eyes opened, and I wanted my ears opened.

The trip was amazing and I learnt heaps! We are very blessed as a nation. I feel like they love God a lot more than we do in Australia. I'm not sure if it is about the amount of love they have for God, or whether they just show it better outwardly, but to me, it really seemed like they had a greater love for God.

I also learnt it is so easy to take things for granted. When we were with the crèche kids, they had nothing to play with and kids play in the streets with only a soccer ball. In Australia, kids tend not to enjoy those simple things as much any more. Seeing that, I have learnt to appreciate Australia and the community I live in.

Project 1:8 was such an awesome experience and I learnt so much!
