I know a song.
It's a Christmas song. It's a song that is loved by millions of people -- especially children. It's a song that speaks about the coming of an important person, a person who knows us (and our every action), a person who is good, loving and who expects us to be the same.
But it's a song that's not about God, or about the coming of Jesus, or about the Christian hope.
What song is it? SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN.
Sometimes it's really hard to memorise Bible verses but Santa Claus is Coming to Town is the Christmas message in a nutshell, but in a secular way.
All that remains to be done, and it is something that as Christians we can do, is substitute the name of Jesus for the name of Santa Claus and we would then have, in lyrical form, the essence of what the Gospel tells us about the return of Jesus, and how we should be ready for it.
We all know that Santa Claus is Coming to Town is sung by millions around the world, and I was thinking about it the other day.
I thought through the words: "He knows when you've been sleeping; he knows when you're awake. He knows if you've been bad or good; so be good for goodness sake."
The book of Psalms talks about God knowing when we sit and when we stand (Psalm 139).
When I look around each Christmas, there is so much that the world does through the month of December to prepare for the coming of Santa Claus and the Christmas season: lights, songs and seemingly endless marketing by retailers.
As Christians though, are we doing all that we can to prepare for the coming of Jesus, to celebrate his birth? And do we just do it in December, or are we preparing the year through?
I hear a lot at Christmas about people being nice and showing love one to another "because it's Christmas." But as Christians, we should be showing love to our communities all the year through with the same love that God showed us.
So this Christmas, are we preparing for Santa Claus to come to town or are we preparing for the Saviour of the world to come into our lives? If we are preparing for Jesus, let's continue to prepare right the year through.
