Sex, marriage and Tiger Woods

10th December 2009 by Mark Soper

What's going on?

I don't know if you've heard or not, but Tiger Woods -- the most successful athlete on the planet and one of the all-time champions in golf -- has been caught having numerous affairs with other women.

It's left his wife and family shattered and has brought about much pain, regret and embarrassment for Tiger.

I was really disappointed because I respect Tiger Woods, not only because he was a great athlete but also because despite all his fame and riches, he still managed to be a sports role model who had family values and who was a man of integrity.

A gift from God

I realised again just how important it is to be faithful to your spouse, and to only have sex inside of marriage. Sex is great and is a gift from God, but it is to be used within his guidelines. What does that mean? Sex is for within marriage only.

Dream a little ...

Let's think for a minute about what the world would be like if people only had sex inside of marriage:

  • There would be greater intimacy, trust and love for each other
  • There would be no prostitution; women and children would not be taken advantaged of in the sex trade
  • STI's and STD's would be non-existent, that would limit disease
  • HIV/AIDS would practically be stopped, as the majority of cases are passed through sexual intercourse
  • There wouldn't be millions of babies aborted world-wide every year
  • We would see a greater respect for women in society (evident through reduced rape and domestic abuse)
  • There would be more complete families (due to no adultery/ affairs leading to divorce)
  • Pornography would disappear, because people wouldn't seek sexual satisfaction outside of marriage
  • There would be a greater trust and commitment in relationships

A better world to live in!

If sex was kept in marriage the world would be a better place, not only for us, but also for the wider community and society.

What happens is that we don't look at the consequences of having sex outside or before marriage, in fact, we glorify them. We only look at the little moment of fulfilment that we want now. But eventually, we have to pay for and live with the consequences much longer.

A prayer

My prayer is that we would all strive to keep sex inside of marriage, which God intended, and that we wouldn't let society and the world tell us it's ok to do otherwise. I pray that through faithful marriages, society would be changed for the better!
