Guest Blog: Work Experience Stories

20th November 2009 by Work Experience

Nikky, Stacey and Joe on work experienceNikky, Stacey and Joe have been on work experience with our team for the week! They've learned about youth ministry, admin, websites, public speaking and have had a chance to ask a lot of questions. If you're interested in youth ministry as a career choice and would like to do work experience with us, we'd love you to get in touch!

Here's some thoughts from Nikky and Joe.

Nikky Thomas

Nikky ThomasI really enjoyed this experience working at THQ. It was so much fun, and I had a really good time working with such awesome people. I recommend it to anyone who is looking at work in youth ministry or any other field that The Salvation Army offers.

 The best...

  • I think the people of Sydney wouldn't see this as a good point, but I really enjoyed getting up early in the morning to catch the train into the heart of the city then walk to Congress Hall. I suppose its because I come from a small country city, where it's only a five minute drive into the main street of town and so it's a different but exciting experience for me.
  • Listening to Graeme Press playing piano... he is so good!
  • Binding LIFE books together for David... I actually had alot of fun with that, I could do it for a living!
  • Attending a meeting with Jarrod about a new ad that will be seen on TV after christmas. It was interesting to see their plans and listen to them evaluate concerns on what the message was meant to be.

 The worst...

  • There weren't really any bad points, but I suppose I could say that I did not enjoy having fast food for lunch everyday. It gave me too much of an upset stomach!

What I learned...

  • The first day that I was there, I was introduced to the people who worked there - they all gave me a brief description of what their jobs were.
  • The Salvation Army is a small world! Everyone I talked to seemed to know alot of things about my corps. They knew who my captains were and they knew that they were being transferred, who was replacing them, and who were the recent captains before.
  • Working in a Christian environment for about 7 hours each day for four days was such a big difference for me. In my usual life I go to school where i'm so distracted by the world and totally forget about God until the next time that I go to church. I hoped that will change when I get home after my week.

Peace out,

Nikky.

Joe Golden

Joe GoldenWell I've just completed one of the most action-packed incredible weeks of my life! And what could it be, you may ask. The THQ MORE work experience program! =]

I've had the insane opportunity to see how MORE works from the inside, and even have a go at some things myself. And of course I got to hang out with the inspirational team. I feel I've learned so much and am even more excited for what the next year holds for me as I train to become a youth pastor!

One high point was definitely prayers on Wednesday morning. I just felt I could be totally upfront and honest about who I am and what I've been through, without being judged or looked down on. I shared my testimony in a way I haven't felt comfortable doing before. It was a truly liberating and encouraging experience.

But more than the actual things we did was the sense of love, support and encouragement there which allowed us space to grow. There is a real sense of community among the team which is so refreshing, and I felt immediately a part of it. I would like to thank all the team so much for the way they took time to sow into my life and set a vision for my future.

I know that I can go back to my normal routine with a new sense of vision and excitement, and am believing for awesome new God things to come.

So, if you're looking for the work experience program of a lifetime, I'd say its about time you head to THQ and get involved. You wont regret it!

Joe
