Last weekend I went to the School for Youth Leadership (SFYL) Graduation. It was a great time hearing about the journey that the students had been on and how God has significantly impacted their lives. During the Graduation ceremony my thoughts were carried to where life has taken me since I left the SFYL but also of the journey the students will now face.
Lieut.-Colonel James Condon shared some great point in the message about living a successful life using examples from Joseph, which also guided my thoughts as well.
Many people want to succeed in life; it's a part of each one of us. We want our life to count. Some people think its getting rich that makes you successful. 50cent was the RnB artist who coined the phrase ‘get rich or die tryin' But what does real success look like for us as followers of Jesus?
The main point I got from the life of Joseph is not that our success comes from wealth and power. Our success is deeper than that. In my mind what Joseph teaches us is that we are successful when the Lord our God is with us in all we do.
How many of us can have it said of us that ‘The Lord was with them'? Do your actions show you are a follower of Jesus? Have you ever asked Jesus to be with you in everything you do?
I try and live my life in a way in which Jesus can shine through me. I'm not perfect at it but he uses me in spite of my weaknesses. The level of our success is determined by the level of our clinging to Jesus.
As Christians we are called to bear fruit. Our fruitfulness determines our success.
John 15:4-5, 8 says "Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing...This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples."
Just like Joseph if we want Jesus to remain in us we need to remain in him. The result will be a successful, fruit filled life for God's glory. Why not check out Joseph's story for yourself - Genesis Chapters 37 - 50
Get rich or die tryin??? I think I'd rather be content by remaining in God and allow him to bear fruit in my life - then I can truly be successful!
Just a thought
Cheers
