The fame game

6th November 2009 by Shandri Brown

So last week at the OneXOne charity event in San Fransisco Charlize Theron raised $140,000 by kissing a girl. It was not what she was actually auctioning but was the boost she needed to pull in more dollars.

What Charlize originally offered was a trip to South Africa to watch a game at the soccer World Cup in 2010 and a meet-and-greet with Nelson Mandela. Sounds pretty good to me, but apparently the package was not attractive enough....it only raised $37,000. This is where Charlize gets annoyed. Jeremy Piven had just sold two walk-on roles in his US drama Entourage for a total of $275,000.

So Charlize swears and tells the audience "there is no way I am leaving here with Jeremy Piven getting a higher bid". Then she builds on her offer. It was only when she promised to smooch the lucky winner that the bidding started to climb, and eventually got to $140,000 (still a fair bit below Jeremy's if I know anything about maths).

Does any of this crazy drama make any sense to anyone else? The one thing that becomes clear to me through it all is that we as a society are completely obsessed with ourselves.

I would be thrilled to bits to meet Nelson Mandela, my goodness what a dream come true!!! But the chick who won the kiss would never have made the papers and had her picture across the internet if all she won was that trip. It's the famous smooch that made the difference.

And the walk on part? Hello! You don't even get a line! But then again it's the chance to see yourself on TV, so why not blow the price of a house on it? I feel disturbed and saddened by the quest for celebrity status and recognition. It all goes by in an instant. I can't even remember the name of who won the last American idol, or many other competitions for that matter.

James 4:14 says that my life is a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. I hope that as my mist fades away people remember seeing Jesus through me, and can't even remember my name.
