Trolley Jousting

30th October 2009 by Shandri Brown

Works best for:

Indoor large scale events with a bit of space. It can be done outside but is much trickier on grass and perhaps a little risky on concrete. Good for some laughs.

You will need:

  • 2 trolleys (borrow them from a local supermarket)
  • 2 pool noodles (I found these for $1.50 at Big W)
  • 2 helmets (your youth group should own these, pick up some cheap ones)
  • 2 empty drink bottles (1 litre milk cartons work best as they have a flat bottom)
  • Some strong tape

Prep:

Roll a small amount of strong tape into a circle to make a double -sided sticky surface. Use this to stick your milk carton to your helmet. Check that trolleys roll well and steer straight. Mark two lanes on the floor with masking tape or chalk.

The game:

Each competitor (the knights) must put on their helmets and climb on their horse (this means climb inside the trolley) holding their jousting stick (pool noodle). They are stationed at either end of the room facing each other and will have a strong person pushing each trolley across the room. On your command they race toward each other and try to knock the milk carton from the opposition's helmet with their jousting stick without having theirs knocked off.

If neither carton is knocked from their heads the trolleys turn around and head towards each other again for round 2.

Notes:

  • Make sure you have some music playing and perhaps a funny commentator to help build atmosphere.
  • Be careful that if trolleys do tip they won't land on anyone in the audience. Perhaps you could suit up the competitors to make it a safer fall.
  • Make sure you return the trolleys at the end of the night, young people need to see their leader doing the right thing!

Comments

  1. Woah! this looks like an awesome game. Makes me wish I was a leader... but I'm too immature. HA! Any way to play it without trolleys though? like office chairs or something?

  2. Great idea. I am keen to do this on office chairs. Probably actually more chance of a serious collision with office chairs than trolleys but I guess there's just one way to find out.
