Depression is not a dirty word!!

21st October 2009 by Rusty Hodges

Depression is not a dirty word. Chances are that you know someone who has recovered from depression or someone who is going through depression. Depression is more than just feeling down for a day or two. Depression is when you feel down, lack motivation, or lack energy and sometimes stop enjoying or doing the things you used to enjoy doing but the feeling lasts for more than a period of two weeks.

It was only a couple of years ago that NRL superstar Andrew ‘Joey' Johns spoke out about his own battle with depression.
Depression is not a taboo subject anymore - something that isn't talked about. In fact, one of the best ways to overcome depression is to talk about it. If you are facing depression and you talk to someone about it, it no longer remains a silent tormentor. But by talking about what you are going through you can establish a support team to help you get through it and overcome depression. If one of your friends is facing depression the best thing you can do is to listen and support your friend.

Youth beyond blue is a great initiative that helps people in depression and those supporting loved ones in depression.
Their strategy for overcoming depression is to:
LOOK - for signs of depression and anxiety
LISTEN - to your friends experiences
TALK - about what's going on
SEEK - help together

Their website www.youthbeyondblue.com has some useful information on depression and anxiety. They have links to get professional help, facts sheet on loads of topics from depression to cyber-bullying, suicide to making the most of studying.
You can join their cause on FaceBook, MySpace, Twitter and many others. So why not go and check out their site and find out more about depression and how you can find help for yourself or others.

Till next time
