merging traffic

1st October 2009 by Simeon Hoffmann

So I was in the car the other day and I could see up ahead of me a car was about to try and merge, but the way our two cars were timed would mean that our cars would be coming up side by side. Now I couldn't get into the right lane because there where cars' flying past me and the traffic was heavy. So that means I had a choice to make either I slow down and let this guy in or I forget and let him deal with the problem on his own.

You know as I sit here and kinda think about what is a pretty insignificant moment I am starting to draw comparisons with that moment and what can sometimes happen in churches. Like think about it for a minute when you are new into church it is like you are trying to merge onto the highway of everything that happens there and you are waiting to see if someone is going to slow down long enough to let you onto the highway. And then there are those who are already on the highway, we fly along on our journey knowing where we are going. The question is not whether the new ones can squeeze into the highway the question needs to be will we take the time to slow down long enough to let people merge onto the highway.

I encourage you to think about how you have already responded to people coming into your church or life who are desperately trying to get where you are going and ask yourself did I slow down and notice them, did I slow down to let them in so they can go in the same direction as me?

Can you imagine what it would be like if we took the time to slow down and take notice of the mergers in our life? May you see them...

Tell next time Simeon Hoffmann

Oh and for those who are wondering you will be pleased to know that I actually did let the merging car in. Peace...
