So I was thinking about not reviewing a 'worship' album for this music review but this one was too hard to go past. Jesus Culture is a movement of passionate young revivalists that was birthed from Bethel Church in California. They put out worship albums and it is seriously exciting stuff. Their latest album is called Consumed and it's a pretty intense spiritual journey. I first listened to it right through the other night and found myself worshipping instead of critiquing which I reckon is a pretty good thing.
Musically it's pretty guitar driven but the album's not full of your standard 3 minute tracks that hold too closely to structure. The shortest song is 5 minutes and there's a lot of unstructured worship time but the album doesn't feel too drawn out and I enjoyed the space that was given to the songs to breathe and develop. Kim Walker-Smith is one of the worship leaders on the album and she's got one of those voices you'll love or hate. It's pretty low in terms of pitch but real strong and it commands attention when she's singing. My picks for the album are a couple of slower ones: Revelation Song and Dance With Me. (check them out on youtube if you get a chance)
I found it such a refreshing sound and if you're keen to find new songs to worship to then it's definitely worth checking out. I'm not convinced these songs would musically work too well in my church on a Sunday morning but that might be different for you :)
I guess if I had to sum up the album in a few words it would be 'passionate worship'. It makes me want to fall more in love with my Creator, so it's a thumbs up from me.
