For those out there who are like me and are always on the lookout for new bands, particularly worship bands that differ from the Hillsong and Planetshakers sound that we have grown so accustomed to, then I present Desperation Band's latest: Everyone Overcome.
Based in Colorado Springs, USA, these guys have been rocking it out since 2001, with three albums released before this one. Like the previous three, Everyone Overcome is a live album which contains a balance of killer up-beat praise songs such as "Light of Salvation", "I Know" and "Counting on God", as well as some incredible dynamic worship songs like "I Will Go", "I'm Coming your Way" (my personal fave), and the album-titled anthem "Overcome".
The most exciting aspect of this band, I believe anyway, is the way they use Scripture to make up their lyrics. An example of this can be found in the bridge of "Overcome" (you know how every CD has one main song which the whole album revolves around? Well this is that one), which is taken straight out of Revelation 12:11 declaring ‘And they have defeated him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of their Testimony. And they were not afraid to die'. Powerful stuff hey? These guys not only declare that no matter what comes their way will they overcome by the Grace of God, but they are committed to constantly become desperate for him, never to grow complacent or contempt - wow! I challenge you to take this verse to heart, remembering it as your walking your school halls, as you get into a discussion with a pre-christian about Jesus, or even as you try and work through some personal problems your going through, remember that He has already overcome and that your testimony is the strongest form of witnessing.
Musically, it doesn't differ too far from other ‘worship-type' bands, but the creative use of the crowd throughout the album and the Prologue containing "ooohs" and an epic drum beat is what makes the album unique. Though there will be temptation for some people to only listen to the first 10 seconds of songs and then change the track - DON'T DO THIS! - I was guilty of it, but it was listening to the CD a short while later that made me realise my mistake. There will be some tracks where you might find a bit lame at first, but I encourage you to play it over and over again if it doesn't grab you at first... you won't be disappointed.
Don't be surprised if Desperation Band is the next big thing - sure Hillsong United is leading the way in terms of providing incredible praise and worship resources for young people, but these guys are climbing the ranks quickly. You'll be able to pick up a copy of Everyone Overcome at your local Koorong or WORD store for a sweet price, as well as the other Desperation Band CDs, so next time your there with your parentals or just by yourself, check them out!!!
