Edible Artwork

Works Best...

In a small to medium sized youth group. Involve the whole group by dividing them into teams of 4 - 6. This will probably take at least 15 minutes plus eating time.

What you need:

  • 1 large tub of icecream for each team (keep an eye out for supermarket specials).
  • A box of latex gloves (the kind used for food prep).
  • Bottles of Ice Magic, lollies, jelly crystals, toothpicks etc.
  • Large platters, baking trays or just cover tables in aluminium foil.
  • Bowls and spoons.

The Game:

Teams will compete to make the artistic and elaborate icecream sundae. Tell them what they need to construct. Do you want them to make a farm, a house, your portrait or just an artwork of their own choice?

Make sure each team member is wearing gloves because they will be molding icecream with their hands (and eating it later). Provide them with:

  • a tray (their canvas)
  • icecream
  • helpful tools ie. spoons, toothpicks (to give support to lollies), lollies, colours etc.
  • a time limit

At the end of their time limit, have an impartial judge decide which team has done the best job. It is best not to wait too long before you let the teams eat the sundaes. Give them spoons and let them eat it from the table or divide it up into disposable bowls.

Notes:

This game works well before an announcement or devotional time as they can eat their sundaes while listening to the leader.

Buy disposable bowls and spoons if possible to minimise clean-up. If you do not have access to a sink make sure you get disposable plastic trays for them to create their sundaes in.

Check for allergies. Have a different lollie treat available at the end for those who are allergic to dairy.
