Ice Ice Baby

12th August 2009 by Shandri Brown

Works best:

In small teams, great to work on cooperation, team communication and creativity. This is a good one for winter months as the ice blocks won't melt quickly.

What you need:

  • 1 large bucket for each team. (You will need to estimate this a few days prior to activity so make sure you over plan rather than be caught out).
  • Plenty of freezer space.
  • A handful of tools for each team - chisels, screwdrivers and blunt kitchen knives work well.
  • A small hammer for each team.
  • Some kind of stand (wooden box etc) to place each ice block on.
  • Either do this outside or have a tarp covering the floor.

The Game:

You will need to have frozen buckets full of water in a large chest freezer a couple of days before your event. Provide each team with an area for ice sculpting (on a stand or table is best) and tip the ice blocks out of the buckets. You will need to provide each team with a time limit to make their ice sculpture and the tools to chip away at their ice block. You may want to give them a topic ie. scuplt a tree, a swan, a penguin or an Old Testament scene (hey why not!).

Notes:

  • Have some wintery treats as prizes - packets of 'marshmallow snowballs' go down a treat.
  • Play some wintery songs in the background to set the ice sculpture mood.
  • If you're not happy for your students to have an ice fight inside make sure you shut down the game as soon as you are done or move it outside.
