Life Group

29th May 2009 by Simeon Hoffmann

So my wife and I had our first bible study at our house on Tuesday night and I must say it was pretty awesome. We opened the invite to anyone who wanted to attend and had four brand new people that we had never met before attend. There where eight of us in total. Anyway, we decided to call ourselves a life group, working on the premise that God is life and life is found in God so if we go about the process of trying to figure out life together we are believing that we will ultimately only come to one answer and that is the source of life: God.

We spent the night getting to know each other and listening to each others story. After a while we got talking about a whole range of deeper issues including faith, evangelism, spiritual gifts, who is God etc(you know just the light hearted stuff). The cool thing for me to think through as I was listening was that pretty much everyone had a different take on almost every thing we spoke about. Despite all our different answers it was very clear that each person in that room is on a journey and coming to our house as strangers is simply part of that journey. Now it would have been easy for me to sit there and spend the night telling everyone what I thought, but instead I got to enjoy the richness of watching as people around me shared their takes on life and on faith. At times there where some amazing revelations that came out and other times I'll admit we got distracted by something known only as 'The Game' but it was seriously cool just hearing everyone share openly and honestly

It made me think: 'What if every person out there is on a journey? What if all they want is someone to listen to where they are at and simply journey with them?' I shared with our life group this same revelation and asked them to consider: 'What if the point of evangelism is to simply journey with someone, to listen and to love and to help them discover God?' Not to try and shove God down there throat but simply to listen and love. I wonder if we would need to minister differently to people if we knew their story.

Well that has got me thinking. I wonder what gets you thinking. Would love to hear what your latest revelation is so why not comment below. Look forward to reading and learning from you.

Till next time...

  1. I love it simo... certanly takes the pressure if we measure success by building relationship and together join the journey of discovering God.

instead of try to 'convert' someone to our way of thinking...

Its amazing to think that the God of all creation actually loves my friends and family more that i do, an yet he knows all about them. Imagine the incredible journey if we would simply listen to what God is saying and follow his lead in ministering to others...
    Great blog mate!
