My 3 year old son, Jordan, is the king of movies and it seems at times that his whole life revolves around characters from Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Bugs Life, Madagascar and other animated movies. The latest instalment to fuel his imagination is "Monsters vs Aliens" which we took him to see over the Easter weekend.
I was sitting there with him just before the movie started and we were opening our ice creams and he randomly said to me "Jesus is in this movie". This got my attention so I thought I'd explore this thought and ask a few questions. "So, what does Jesus do in this movie?" I asked him. He then, very confidently and with karate actions, said "Jesus fights all the monsters and wins". I was almost rolling around on the floor in laughter seeing Jordan do his karate moves pretending to be Jesus.
But then ... with a stitch in my stomach from laughing so hard ... I thought about it for a moment. Jordan has such a fantastic imagination and constantly makes me laugh with his antics being characters from different movies, but this time there was an element of truth. Innocently, yes, but it made me again consider Easter and what it means to us.
The fact - Jesus died on Good Friday. The fact - He did it for you.
We never like getting the news that someone close to us has died and the emotions that go with that and in some ways it's similar knowing that Jesus died and the kind of death he died. But the reason he died and its relevance to us is incredible and actually makes it good news. To put it simply, Jesus died so you can live in complete freedom. I don't think you heard me? Jesus died so you can live in complete freedom!
You can be free from every wrong, every burden and every piece of bagagge you may carry. Why? Because Jesus paid the price through his death and because he died, we can be free. Great news huh?
The fact - Jesus rose again on Easter Sunday. The fact - he did it for you.
So, you can live in freedom through Jesus' death. Well, it's through him rising from the dead that you can live in hope. Who doesn't want to live in hope? Well, here is the hope of the world himself conquering death and giving you the opportunity to live in hope through a relationship with Jesus.
By living a life of hope in Jesus, you will have joy, purpose, value, direction, strength, courage, and a future that is great.
The fact - Jesus died and rose again. The fact - it was all for you.
So, I know you're asking yourself, what does Monsters vs Aliens have to do with Easter? Jordan's idea that Jesus was in the movie and fought all the monsters and won made me think of Easter because he has won the victory!
You can live in freedom and in hope. That is victory right there!
Until next time.
