What could be one of the most known 'quotes' across the world is that which we call The Lord's Prayer. Mostly everyone knows it, or has at least heard it. I, myself, have grown up chanting it on the occasions to which I am called to do so. However, when typing it up into a poster for youth today my heart was yearning for each young person who was to read it to have more come of it then what is known. That it wouldn't be a recital of words, but God-breathed life touching the depths of their hearts and transforming life as they knew it through revelation they began to receive of who God truly is.
The greatest passion I have is to see people come to places of revelation of who God is through understanding His Word. There is so much to God's Word that I don't want people, especially youth, to miss out on it. I so strongly yearn for people to come to a place of revelation, understanding and knowledge of God through His Word and seeing their lives be transformed into a life complete and abundant in Christ Jesus. Thus, in my lunch break, I went away praying and drawing out more from this passage to come up with 'The Lord's Prayer - Extension 1'. What you will read only skims the surface of truth and understanding that can come from this passage. Nonetheless, I am praying that what follows is God-breathed life and revelation that transforms/encourages you as to how you know to worship God and pray.
Matthew 6:9-13
The Lord's Prayer
" 'This, then, is how you should pray: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name, Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us form evil." ' "
The Lord's Prayer - Extension 1
- Our Father in Heaven [ You alone are God of all, completely Sovereign, all-powerful, Lord and King. It was in You that all things were created, in Heaven and on earth, things seen and things unseen, whether thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities; all things were created and exist through You and in and for You (Colossians 1:16)] Declare God as God.
- Hallowed be Your Name [In this day be lifted high, in my life be lifted high. There is none like You. You are worthy of total honour. Praise You for Salvation, praise You for Your grace, for Your love, for Your worth.] Praise God for who He is and what He has done (Psalm 9:1).
- Your Kingdom come on earth as it is in Heaven [Imprint Your Word and truths all the more upon my mind, even upon my innermost thoughts and understanding, and engrave them upon my heart; be established as my God for I belong to You. May Your hearts' yearning continue to be made known through your Church, that all would personally know, not know of but know, you (Hebrews 8:10-12).] Kingdom="I would be their God and they would be My people." God's heart is that people would know Him. Here, pray for your family, friends, your church, the community you are in to know the reality of God more.
- Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven [Draw me into a place where I trust You with the entire complexity of my life. Lead me along the path You have set, where I surrender to Your will without a need to figure things out (Proverbs 3:5-6). As I learn to trust in Your will more today fill me with all joy and peace so that I may overflow with hope by the power of Your Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13).] Submit all decisions, worries and dreams under God's Will, trusting He has your best interest at heart. Pray, also, for family and friends to trust God's will in what they might be going through.
- Give us today our daily bread [You are Provider, God (Matthew 6:32). May I not worry about what I will eat or drink or what I will wear, for You know what I need and life is more important than food and clothes (Matthew 6:25-31). Instead, may I be thankful for what you will provide for me today, drinking and eating to Your glory (1 Corinthians 10:31). And give me more of the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ (John 6:35). May I not be in a place without vision where men perish, but may I have fresh revelation of who You are and have my life further transformed by Your Word.] Pray for what you need, for your family and friends and what they need - physically and spiritually.
- Forgive us our sins [I apologise for any act or motive of my heart that has not pleased You but, in turn, has displayed my rejection of who You are and Your heart. I acknowledge that I have fallen short of who am can be in You because of deliberate disobedience and human nature (Romans 3:23). However, I ask that You would forgive me and remember my sins no more (Hebrews 8:12). I am immensely thankful that You have displayed Your love and my worth to You through Jesus' blood being shed in death instead of mine. For my sake You made Christ to be sin, who knew no sin, so that in and through Him I may become viewed as approved and acceptable and in right relationship with You, that is righteousness, by Your goodness, grace and mercy (2 Corinthians 5:21).] Admit to God your faults and be transformed, and ever honouring to Him, through His grace.
- As we forgive those who sin against us [You are judge, not I, and all will come under Your rule. Continually remind me of my place under grace and, thus, acknowledging all people under that same grace. Where people hate me, help me display Your unconditional love for them and where people hurt me, I pray that they may come to know life and truth in You. Free me from bitterness, judgement and anger towards anyone. May I endure to live a life like Christ.] Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:44).
There is so much more when we find revelation between the lines of the chants we know.
