On the weekend I was driving to Newcastle as Mike, my husband, was watching Stargate on the laptop. During one of the episodes I heard the following statement, "The candle only burns as long as is the length of its wick." The characters went on to siphon from the remark that the wick of a candle is it's centre, if the wick burns out the candle is finished.
Four things you need to know about candles in Church Ministry:
1. God is the Creator of the candle. He forms it, places the ingredients together strategically, perfectly for His plan and vision.
- "For by Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities, all things were created by Him and for Him." Col 1:16
2. You are the wick. As a anointed and appointed leader, you carry God's heart and vision for the church and the ministry of which you are involved.
- "Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which God has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which He bought with His own blood." Acts 20:28
3. The flame is God's Holy Spirit empowering you, aligning you with His heart and passions.
- "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses..." Acts 1:8
4. The wax is those around you who are effected by your leadership, whether it be other leaders, youth or children. The responsibility you carry as a leader is huge. Everything you are and do in the Name of Christ influences everyone.
How do you want to burn? Do you burn by God who created you and the ministry, relying on the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to be the centre of the ministry for its' vision and passions. God needs to be your affection and inspiration day after day. He, then, will be what gives your ministry, and those touched by it, life and vision and passion for Him. As a leader, all eyes look to you. Are they looking at God in and working through you as the creator and power or are they just looking at you? Be a leader who is alive in God day after day after day after day...
