The meaning of life

25th February 2009

Isn't life weird?  Today I am anxiously, excitedly awaiting the birth of my third child... and it is exciting to think that a new person is currently growing and soon to be released upon the world... but I was also grounded in reality today when talking to my cousin, and he reminded me that this week he and his wife remember that it is a year since their baby passed away...

WOW.. hit me with a brick and call me unconscious...my thoughts went spiralling all over the place and I asked God, "What is the meaning of life?"  This is one of those big questions that I feel everyone asks at least once in their lives.  And I know some of history's greatest philosophers have also tackled this question, like...

The Monty Python team (if you haven't heard of them GET OUT FROM UNDER YOUR ROCK).  They addressed this issue in their parody, "The Meaning of Life".  Despite the flamboyant musical numbers, great costumes and 'cutting edge' animation, they failed to deliver.

Also Douglas Adams tried to answer this in his book "The Hitchhiker's GUide to the Galaxy".  We see a whole race of people, so dedicated to finding out the meaning of life they build a super computer, only to come up with a number... 42... what the?

So what is the answer? I knew the best place to go is my Bible (surprise, surprise)...

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 & 4 says; "Everything on earth has its own time and its own season.  There is a time for birth and death, planting and reaping... for crying and laughing, weeping and dancing."  That's great, we know that life has good and bad points, but what is the meaning of life?

Look, I think everyone has struggled with this question right throughout history.  I believe the answer for the meaning of life is relatively simple and the same for everyone; it is to love God by choosing to have a relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus Christ.

'God made us in His image' [Genesis 1:26], and we were created to glorify Him, "... from the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise" [Psalm 8:2] . All things are to bring glory and praise to God.

So today I remember the life of my cousin's son who was with us for a short time, but through his death we have seen God honoured by the testament of His strength and compassion given to the family during their loss.  I also celebrate the life of my unborn child, and the wonder and hope new life brings... and I celebrate my life and my purpose; to glorify God in all I do.

So live your life with purpose and "...whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God". [1 Corinthians 10:31b.

Ciao for now... Roscoe
