Man, I had a bad morning today... about 3am my one year old, Tierney, decided that she was going to have the night terrors and began to scream... and I don't mean a little "yelp" in her sleep... I mean that blood curdling, heart stopping scream that comes from the depth of true fear... and of course when she screamed all she could yell was, "Dadda, Dadda, Dadda, Dadda, Dadda, Dadda, Dadda...(you get the picture) until my wife, melanie came and picked her up from her cot... she was brought into our bed, looked at me with her big, deep blue eyes and simply said "cuggle?" [translation - cuddle]
I eventually put her (and myself) back to sleep... but it made me think about fear...
What do we fear, why to we fear it, how can we stop fearing...
God reminded me (after I awoke at a respectable hour) that fear is not from him. Fear is a tool the adversary, SATAN, uses on us to keep us from trusting and relying on God for protection. Psalm 34:4 says, "I sought the Lord and he answered me; he rescued me from everything I fear." and in verse 8 of the same chapter it says, "Taste, and see that the Lord God is good. How blessed are those who take refuge in him!"
God reminded me, very visually, that just as Tierney screamed during her night terrors for her Dadda, I can call for my Father from heaven, who sees and knows all I do and he answers me in my fear and strengthens and protects me.
If fear is from the Adversary, then the opposite to fear is love; and love comes from God. John was clear about this in his letter to the early church in the Roman province of Asia (now modern day Turkey). He wrote; "There is no fear in love. On the contrary, love that has achieved its goal gets rids of fear, because fear has to do with punishment; the person who keeps fearing has not been brought to maturity in regards to love. We ourselves know love because he [God] loved us first." 1 John 4:18 &19.
Some translations even puts tthe middle bit of verse 18 as "perfect love drives out all fear."
So next time you're having night terrors, or your afraid of a situation, or you are driving along the highway, remember that 'Perfect love drives out all fear'. All we need to do is call out to our God who loves us and he will take away our fears.
