Do you like your toes? I'm not a fan of my toes, a minor thing I know, but I know of a lot of people who this causes great concern, so much so that they never leave the house without complete and utter coverage of their toes. Toes........food for thought!
I have had a lot of food for thought over these past few days as along with the rest of the nation I have been watching the news reports on the bushfires in Victoria. As I write this blog the official death toll stands at 173. That is 173 men; women and children, who did not get up this morning, did not eat breakfast, brush their teeth, get in their car and drive to work or school. There are many more who will not go home tonight, eat dinner, watch T.V, shower, put on clean jammies and hop into bed for a good night's sleep because all of that which was theirs is gone. When I think of all the things I have in my home I can not imagine what it would be like to stand in the front yard and see nothing left in front of me. So right about now in my food for thought process, my dilemma with my toes doesn't seem so important.
As I drove my children to school this morning, CD blaring (cause we like to sing at the top of our voices, windows up of course, we don't want to frighten passing traffic), the words "how great is our God, sing with me how, great is our God and all the world will see, how great is our God" came on and I was challenged to pray. I realised that I had been doing a lot of ‘contemplating', ‘talking' and watching the bush fires but not a lot of praying. Now those of you who know me well, know that I can and do cry at a toilet paper add on the telly, the slightest hint of a sob story and I am gone. This is due to the last few years of God answering my prayer, ‘God give me a tender, humble heart that I may love like you do'.
This morning, as I began to pray for the people affected by the bushfires and those people involved in helping them, tears streamed down my face. (Yep the ugly cry...who invented the ugly cry? It really should be abolished). My prayer became the words of the next chorus, ‘Great is your love and justice, God, you use the weak to lead the strong, you lead us in the song of salvation. And all you people sing along, your grace is enough. So remember your people, remember your children, remember your promise oh God'.
I'm not sure what would bring comfort to the people who have lost everything but I am sure that God will remember his people and His promise. "Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the creator of the ends of the earth does not faint or grow weary; there is no searching of His understanding. He gives power to the faint and weary, and to him who has no might He increase strength (causing it to multiply)........But those who wait for the Lord ( who expect, look for and hope in Him) shall change and renew their strength and power........"(Is.40:28-31 selected AMP version).
These verses fill me with hope and an assurance that God does and will remember the people of Victoria. I am filled with a hope and peace in my God that from this tragedy, greatness will abound.
So for all those with covered up toes (and you thong wearing crowd) - set them free and give them a victory wiggle and pray for the people of Victoria.
