My husband and I are loving the TV show Heroes at the moment. Hiro's my favourite. I find him adorable with his cute little scrunched up nose and his over-the-top expressive responses to everything.
If you haven't watched it - I'll try not to spoil it for you but basically it's kind of like X-men but in my opinion heaps better. The show revolves around a bunch of people who are human but have super-human powers. From regeneration (the ability to heal) to the ability to fly the main characters all have some kind of incredible power.
Some of them like Hiro Nakamura are all about using their powers for good. They want to save innocent strangers and are determined to use their 'gifts' to heal the world. Others use their gifts for evil. Sylar, for instance has the ability to steal other people's talents by murdering them. He is thirsty for power and kills people without discretion.
It's a clever show. It raises some interesting points about the choices we make and how we use the power and the talents that we've been given.
When I was eleven years old I remember my Dad looking me in the eye and saying with a hint of frustration in his voice: "You Claire Farthing (that was my name before I got married) have the gift of the gab. Now you can choose to use that for the world or you can choose to use it for the Lord." I think he must have caught me being especially cruel with my words or especially cheeky or gossipy or something.
I didn't have any super-human powers and still don't but God has given me some gifts just like he has with anyone. We're all given talents, opportunities and power and we're all faced with the question: 'Will I use it to build the kingdom or will I sew it into the world?
My personal heroes are all people who chose to use what they were given not just for good, but for God. Think Mother Teresa. Think Miriam Gluyas.
I want to be someone who gives everything and anything I have - any position of responsibility - any natural gifting - any learned skill - any opportunity and any freedom I am blessed with for the purposes of God.
I want to be a hero. :)
