Marie weeps uncontrollably; people walk past not knowing what to say or how to comfort her. This woman weeps for her children, her three sons who are born deaf and mute.
Ben walks past this woman and asks: "...mother, what seems to be wrong?" As she pours her heart out to Ben, God pours out his love and compassion to Marie.
This man of God is sent to bring healing to this broken family. Marie has tried all sorts of things but nothing seems to work. But today is different- Ben offers to come to her house and to pray with her boys.
There is no instant healing or physical miracle, but the family begin to see improvements in the hearing and speech of each of the boys. The greatest miracle though, is the family's acceptance of Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.
Marie's salvation resulted in many thousands of people getting saved all around the world. Her extended family have used their experiences for full time ministry to impact people and spread the gospel to thousands in over three continents.
Marie is my grandmother and the story of her Salvation and that of my uncles, aunties and even my own dad, stirred in my heart when my youngest son Micah was born with severe hearing loss.
God spoke to me and said the greatest miracle that will occur is not Micah's physical healing but the salvation of his soul and those around us.
Jesus tells his followers: "As the Father has sent me, I am sending you" He not only accepts us, he entrusts us with the message of the gospel. He gives us a great privilege by believing in us.
Listen to how Paul states it: "he has committed to us the message of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us." (2 Cor. 5:18-20)
Notice that Jesus sends us into the world in the same way the Father sent him. This has some important implications for you and me.
As Jesus went to the world, we are to go to others and not just sit back and wait for others to come. We are to be initiators just as he was.
We are to teach the truth like he did, by opening our mouths. What would have happened if Jesus had never said anything about the truth? We would certainly have still called him a great man, but we wouldn't have known where the greatness came from.
How many people have you heard say: "I witness for Jesus by the way I life my life." If that's true, great! We need to live consistently. The power of a Christ-like life is overwhelming and we must explain where the joy comes from.
As Jesus demonstrated the validity of his message by what he did - and we must do the same. Jesus not only accepts us, he commissions us, equips us and motivates us.
The motivation is that the world is desperately in need of the message we have. If we don't go forward, some will never hear that they can be set free. Some will never know the joy of salvation and the spirits strength in the difficult times.
If we don't tell the people we come in contact with about the Gospel...we have no right to call ourselves their friends and Christ's disciples.
Joshua, my eldest son is now eight years old. When he was three he would knock on the neighbours' door and ask if they knew Jesus. One day he went over and asked our neighbour to read him the bible as he didn't know how to read.
Our neighbour, Skye loved Josh. He was friendly and very nice to her, so she was willing to read his Bible to him. What she didn't realise is that she was really reading the Bible to herself and within a short time, she asked if she could come to church as she was now a Christian. I was amazed a three year old boy could lead someone to Christ.
When Jesus called the first disciples, he made his first promise: "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men." (Mark 1:16) Immediately, there is something here that every Christian should realise - if your not fishing, you are not following! The real essence of Jesus followers is the making of other disciples.
Acts 6:7: "Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied."
How does a church multiply? How are people won to Jesus?
Jesus not only entrusts us with the responsibility of proclaiming the gospel other - he equips us for the job!
The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit will:
Any command of God carries with it the power to fulfil that command and every Christian is given the Holy Spirit to be witnesses for Jesus: "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you: and you shall be witnesses." (Acts 1:8)
William Booth stated:
"While women weep as they do now, I'll fight; while little children go hungry, as they do now, I'll fight; while men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I'll fight; while there is a drunkard left, while there is a poor lost girl upon the streets, while there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I'll fight - I'll fight to the very end."
The mission of the gospel is clear - we are to fight for the lost.
You have received your battle orders. They are clear! William Booth right until his death, was motivated and encouraging his army, God's army to fight! Friends, we need the courage to fight for lost people.
