“Even Superman had his kryptonite.” I just heard preacher T D Jakes say this on tv and it set my mind racing. We all have struggles of some kind. Pretending that we don’t have any hassles doesn’t make us a better Christian, it just makes us phony. Ignoring the things that harass us doesn’t make them go away.
We all face temptations. Even Jesus faced temptation (read about it in Matthew chapter 4.) So if Jesus faced temptation then we don’t need to feel like failures when we do too. Facing temptation is not the problem, giving into temptation is. For some of us there is a particular temptation that keeps coming back in our face and haunting us over and over again. For others, Satan keeps finding new ways to lure us into sin.
Sometimes we can find it hard to understand why our friend struggles with a certain issue because it’s not an issue for us. But just as we are each different, so too are the battles we face. I find it hard to understand the lure of alcohol and drugs. I haven’t experienced the depths of depression. I can’t fathom why my friend would battle with self harm, cutting her body so that it bleeds. Nor would everybody get what I struggle with. But we don’t have to experience or fully understand what our friends find hard in life. We just need to accept that they are real struggles for them and support and encourage them not to give in.
We can take comfort and encouragement from Paul in the Bible. God doesn’t want us to give into temptation. He wants to provide us with the means to withstand it.
It says in 1 Corinthians 10:13: “No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he'll never let you be pushed past your limit; he'll always be there to help you come through it.” (The Message)
So, what’s your kryptonite? It doesn’t have to paralyse you. It doesn’t have to weigh you down. God wants to provide you with a way out.
