Commissioned in reverence

12th December 2008

You know I must admit I was pleasantly surprised this year with Commissioning. I am sure I am not alone when I say that sitting through long services is not always the most exciting things on my to do list, but this year there certainly seemed to be a different feel to Commissioning...I mean don't get me wrong it was still a long service but there was something different this year. That's right you guessed it this year Commissioning was held in sunny QLD!

For the first time ever they bought cCommissioning all the way up to QLD, and didn't we turn on the weather. It was a typical QLD summer day. Hot and humid through the day followed by a torrential down poor in the early evening. And even though it is awesome that it was in QLD cause lets face it where else would you want it, there was something else that stuck out about the day to me.

At the start of the service Commissioner Linda Bond laid down some ground rules explaining that the service was going to be a little different from other years. So anyway I thought to myself, a little cynically I'll admit ‘this should be fun.'

So it came time for the cadets to be ordained and commissioned, and each one came out quietly knelt before the altar as Commissioner Bond prayed over their lives. Then as they rose and received their official documents, Commissioner Bond shook their hands and looking in their eyes, she spoke a simple word over their life. Even though I was right up the back of the very large hall with all the other noisy kids (my wife, my girls, Claire Hill, Jarrod Newton etc), I could see that there was a real purpose in the way she was speaking those words, almost as if they where prophetic words being spoken over each and everyone of their lives.

You know to be honest with you I truly felt like we where witnessing this deeply intimate and personal moment as each cadet stepped into their calling, it was actually, surprisingly, pretty cool. But every time things got too serious I just had to look at my good mate Pauly who is a first year cadet and was the flag bearer. It was actually pretty hilarious that they chose the smallest guy in college to be the flag bearer, he literally disappeared behind the flag. Pauly if you're reading this, sorry mate but I am pretty sure God still loves short people like you - it's all good bro!

Well that is my thoughts on Commissioning and if you were there I would love to hear your thoughts.

Till next time, cya l8r...
