During one week I met a 12 year old girl who was the youngest of a stack of kids and had a difficult home life. Up the back of a loud, busy youth club she asked Jesus to be Lord and King of her life. This moment changed both of us.

In my late teens and early 20's, I started going to other religions to see how they acted out the gospels. I read up on Buddhism and Islam, went to the Hare Krishnas for a while, and started comparing religions and other spiritual systems, including the aboriginal spirits. Still it didn't give me anything to hold on to, to live by.

We used to go surfing up and down the coast. One day at Gosford we went to an evangelical gig - we heard the music blaring and stopped and listened. I liked the music; it was really good worship music. I enjoyed just sitting there and being there.

At about 13, in year eight, I had already been suspended three times and was on the verge of expulsion. As a last resort from the school I was sent to a 'Take 5' program, which was run by The Salvation Army.

At this point I had moved back in with my father by choice. My relationship with Jesus had allowed me to forgive my dad for what he had done to me and we had a much better relationship from that point on.

Find a Church

Want to find your closest Christian community? There's probably a Salvos near you.

"In him was life, and that life was the light of men" (John 1:4)

Salvos are Christians who are passionate about being in relationship with Jesus Christ. Because of our relationship with him, we love to serve people. It can be summed up in our ministry philosophy 'heart to God, hand to others' - relationship with God comes first and the rest follows.

We are an organisation who is also passionate about life. Why? Because we were given life by God through Jesus Christ and we want to share that with the world - we can't help but share love in our neighbourhoods, life in our nation and light in the darkness.

And that's what the Light of the World campaign* is all about. We want to see the Light of Jesus at work in our world. The Salvation Army Church Fund has fully funded this project in the hope that the light of Jesus will be seen by more and more Aussies.

Our prayer is that this website will bring the Light of the World to the darkness in our world.
