Fundraising tips

Here are our 5 top tips on each of the following:

Planning your fundraiser – 5 TOP TIPS

  1. Set goals for your group: How much do you need to raise? When do you need to raise it by?
  2. Choose the fundraising activity you will do (see 'fundraising ideas')
  3. Set a realistic timeline and commit to sticking to it
  4. Plan a memorable kick off
  5. Lock in the key coordinating team members

Managing the money – 5 TOP TIPS

  1. Bank the money on the day you receive it
  2. Decide on and communicate a clear process for collecting the money from your fundraising team members
  3. Decide on and communicate a clear procedure for recording incoming funds – where did the funds come from? Will receipts be required?
  4. Determine a secure place where the coordinator will store money before banking
  5. Ensure your plans do not involve under 18s handling substantial amounts of money

Your fundraiser team – 5 TOP TIPS

  1. Determine who will oversee the whole fundraiser. He/she needs to be an organised, motivated person with management skills who is committed to seeing young people enabled to go to KINGDOM COME
  2. Determine what jobs are required and lock in relevant team members
  3. Plan your progress meetings. How often and when will you meet to monitor progress?
  4. Headhunt - Who are the people in your corps who have specific skills that would be helpful? Approach them and ask them to be involved
  5. Ask the whole corps – There are probably many people in your corps who'd love to support this cause – and not just by giving money. If it's a chocolate fundraiser, perhaps they'll take a box to their workplace. If it's a bake sale, perhaps they'll bake some goodies or man a stall. Ask your corps officer for some time in your corps' main weekly gathering to let people know about the opportunity to help

Staying safe – 5 TOP TIPS

  1. Never compromise when it comes to safety
  2. Utilise relationships with friends and family instead of selling to strangers
  3. Involve parents in the fundraising
  4. Get parental approval before involving under 18s
  5. Never carry large amounts of cash with you

Preparing your youth group for the fundraiser – 5 TOP TIPS

Don't spring the campaign on your young people, parents or corps without notice. Prepare them about 6 weeks in advance and then, in the lead up...

  1. Share with them the reason for the fundraiser
  2. Remind them of when it will start/finish
  3. Let them know how they can be involved
  4. Advise them of how they should handle the money (if your chosen fundraiser requires them to do so)
  5. Answer any questions before you start

Being a good fundraising team member – 5 TOP TIPS

  1. Be prepared to talk passionately about your cause
  2. Be polite, and smile!
  3. Focus your fundraising efforts on friends and family
  4. Think of people in your life who would be keen to see you get to KINGDOM COME, and ask them how they can help
  5. Pay attention to the instructions your fundraising coordinator has given you

Keeping everyone motivated throughout – 5 TOP TIPS

  1. Answer questions as they arise
  2. Give updates on how things are progressing – for example, you might like to advertise your ongoing sales through your Sunday newsletters or you could use a fundraising thermometer. You can download one for free here.
  3. Have a prize for the person who raises the most money
  4. Find fresh ways, throughout the process to remind people of how great it will be to get them all to KINGDOM COME!
  5. At the very end of the fundraiser, don't just take the money and run! Take time to write thankyou letters to all who contributed, and publish the results of the fundraising efforts in your church newsletter.
